How to Start the Knowledge: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Start the Knowledge: A Step-by-Step Guide

Becoming a licensed London taxi driver is one of the most respected professional journeys in the world. At the heart of it lies The Knowledge of London — the world-famous training process that tests your ability to navigate the capital’s streets and landmarks without relying on sat nav.

For many, the process feels daunting at first. But with the right approach, guidance, and support, it becomes a structured path that leads to one of the most rewarding careers in London.

This guide walks you through every step of getting started on The Knowledge.

1. Apply to TfL to Begin the Knowledge

Your first step is to apply to Transport for London (TfL) for your taxi driver licence.

  • You’ll need to complete the online application form on the TfL website.

  • TfL will carry out a background check, including an enhanced DBS check (criminal record check).

  • A medical examination is also required to ensure you meet the health standards.

Once approved, you’ll be officially registered as a Knowledge of London student.

2. Get Your First Blue Book

TfL will issue you with the Blue Book – a collection of 320 runs (routes) that form the foundation of the Knowledge. These runs cover every corner of central London within a 6-mile radius of Charing Cross.

The Blue Book is your core study material. You’ll be expected to learn these runs thoroughly and then build on them with your own knowledge of surrounding streets and points of interest.

3. Choose a Knowledge School (Why WizAnn Can Help)

While some attempt to study alone, most candidates find success through a Knowledge school. At WizAnn, we provide:

  • Structured lessons that break down routes and strategies.

  • Videos, maps, and study resources tailored for Knowledge students.

  • Call-over practice sessions, where you rehearse runs with a partner.

  • Supportive teachers and fellow students, keeping you motivated and on track.

Studying in a proven system saves time, reduces confusion, and ensures you learn in the most effective way.

4. Equip Yourself Properly

To study effectively, you’ll need:

  • A reliable motor scooter or an Electric Bicycle (most students use one) to travel the runs.

  • An up-to-date map of London (the A-Z is still the standard).

  • A notebook or digital tool for tracking progress.

  • Plenty of dedication and consistency — the Knowledge is a marathon, not a sprint.

5. Develop a Study Routine

Most students who succeed on the Knowledge build a daily habit.

  • Call over at least 40-80 runs per day with a partner.

  • Travel runs on your bike several times a week.

  • Review points of interest connected to each road.

  • Keep testing yourself — memory is built through repetition.

The key is steady, consistent effort rather than bursts of cramming.

6. Prepare for Appearances

As you progress, you’ll be invited to TfL for your first appearance exams. These are one-to-one oral tests where an examiner asks you to call runs from memory.

  • The first appearance may focus on Blue Book runs.

  • Later appearances test your flexibility with alternative routes and deep knowledge of London’s geography.

  • Each stage gets progressively more demanding until you reach your finals (Requisition), where you will be awarded your Green Badge.

7. Stay Motivated and Supported

The Knowledge takes most people 3–4 years to complete, it can be done in 18 months. It’s challenging, but thousands before you have succeeded.

The difference often comes down to:

  • Choosing the right method.

  • Surrounding yourself with the right people.

  • Trusting the process and persevering through tough moments.

  • and the most decisive factor is necessity

At WizAnn, we’ve guided countless students to the finish line. With structured support, expert teachers, and a community that understands the journey, you’ll never feel like you’re studying alone.
